I bought a four-pack the other day and wondered why my bill was so high. I looked at the receipt today and noticed that I was charged $7.99! There wasn’t a price on the shelf and I just assumed that it would be the same $4-5 most other premium four-packs sell for. Nope. I mean, it’s good stuff, but it’s not $2/bottle good...

Jones always seems ridiculously expensive, at the local gas station hey are like 2.69 a bottle I think. I think I’ll just stick with Stewart’s.

Don’t shop at Straubs.

I’m too cheap to shop at Straubs, as good as it is. And it wasn’t even Dierberg’s - it was Schnucks!

OK, it was in Ladue, but still...

World Market had all sorts of higher-end sodas on special for $1/bottle when you bought any 6. It was a good opportunity to try all sorts of various flavors in the search for the perfect root beer.

Wow, I spend that on a 6 pack of craft beer.

There was a bookstore I used to love going to that sold them for a dollar a pop (pun intended). And my local grocery store used to sell them for just a few cents more. But, over the years, Jones has gotten a little too high on the smell of their own perfume because that pricing didn’t last long.

I don’t know why, but something about Jones soda’s backaging repulses me.

Precisely. Although I really like this stuff, I already know what it tastes like. St Louis is a serious beer town, and there are more varieties from more microbreweries around here than I will probably ever have a chance to try. Like you said, I could have tried some new and interesting beer for that kind of money.

What were the results? The world needs to know what root beer is the correct choice. Not even joking. Love me some good root beer.

Because they literally have people sending them free imagery to put on their bottles and spend $0 on designing it?

I haven’t consumed many of them yet, but so far my favorite is Bundaberg, out of Australia of all places. I love their ginger beer, and frequently grab a 12-pack over at Costco. It was a fellow Oppo that informed my that they made a root beer, and it took a few trips to World Market to actually find some as they frequently sell out. It’s clean, with a nice bite, and not overly sweet.

OK, you may cringe at this, but there are times when I actually crave A&W, especially if I can get it on tap. It’s a nostalgia thing really. I like the creaminess, and it reminds me of stops whilst on road trips when I was a child, where I would always, without fail, order a root beer float. A&W had their own chain of restaurants decades and decades ago, and I would always ask (more like whine and beg) to stop there, usually on those long drives from Orange County up to visit my grandparents in the SF bay area.

What can I say - I was a weird kid. I preferred mustard to ketchup, black liquorice to red, and root beer to cola or other soft drinks (with Cactus Cooler a close second). I still feel the same way today, and you will not find ketchup in my house (unless it’s curry flavored and came from Germany)...

A&W on tap is the best root beer. Not the syrup mix at most places now. I worked at one in hs. All the root beer you can drink. Best summer.

I’ve been able to get it at Long John Silvers. Normally I just drink water at fast food places, but I will go there, and order a large instead of my usual small drink, just to enjoy that A&W. This despite getting food poisoning twice (!) at one particular branch.

Yeah, you’re probably right.

I might just stop in for the drink and nothing else, although I do like their fried clams.

Jones is ‘spensive... but that’s how they avoided bankruptcy a few years ago. “I got an idea! We could just charge twice as much for our product as we do now!”

That may save them in the short term, but it’s not going make long-term customers out of cheapskates like me. I like their green apple soda, but I also like an apple-flavored malt beverage out of Holland that only sets me back $7 for a six pack.
